from mogwai.co.uk:

further mocking the statement that the abc was our only uk show this year, we are to play two charity shows at the end of november. they are in aid of the society to welcome refugees to glasgow and the mental health awareness charity 'one in four'. the venues and dates are:

rock action records future plans include another part chimp ep before the end of 2005, followed by chris brokaw and errors releases early in 2006.

engineers remix 01/09/05

insound are running a competition to win copies of volume two of their 'insound 7" box' series, featuring the contantines "insectivora (live)" b/w engineers "home (mogwai remix)". only 1000 copies of the single have been pressed, and 10 are up for grabs.

originally scheduled for release on 13th june, the mogwai mix was due to feature amongst the b-sides of engineers 'home' single. however, this was pulled at the last minute, and downgraded from a full release to download-only, available via itunes (more details at the engineers website). it appears that some copies had already been pressed before the decision was taken to pull the record.
giant step mailorder are selling 'home' 12" singles, including the remix (postage from the us puts the overall cost up to around £8).
there were a number of cd promos on ebay, but these are one track only and do not include the mogwai remix. copies of a five-track cd ep, which does include the remix, have proved more elusive.

if anyone has any further info on this, please let us know.

alan 16/08/05

culled from an interview with alan mcgee on the poptones website:

the new mogwai record is being mixed at the moment. it is incredible. i think this is going to be a word of mouth record. i can't see how this is going to be played on radio one or radio two but you know what – it is probably the greatest art rock record that i've been involved in since my bloody valentine's loveless. its possibly better than loveless. it is the record that they have always threatened to make and unless something tragic goes on during the mixing process we will have an absolute masterpeice. for mogwai this is a creative career high ... sure other records might sell more – but they are going to be hard pressed to beat this record ... this is the record that they have always threatened to make.

it is a shockingly good record – fucking masterpiece.

abc gig 19/08/05

mogwai played three new tracks at the abc gig last night. 'glower of a cat' and 'we're no here' were played at atp earlier in the year but 'misery' seems to have had its first live outing. also a rare live outing for 'tracy'. wish i could have been there...

the setlist can be found here.

update 21/8/05 : fantastic photos of the show and also of rock action support errors, can be found at neale smith.com. follow the press section link and then choose 'm' from the bands - and then 'mogwai live @ abc'. while you're there check out the rest of the site - well worth a visit!

thanks, neale.

the neverendingwhitelights album is finally released in canada on 23rd august, but without mogwai's contribution. according to daniel victor (who is neverendingwhitelights):

too hot for five live... 10/08/05

mogwai featured on the radio five live's anita anand late night show on tuesday 9th august. they were mentioned as part of a phone in regarding 'rock and roll high jinks' and the now infamous blur t-shirts.

in true bbc tradition of non-profanity, the t-shirts were said to have the motif 'blur : are rubbish'!

mill 30/06/05

confirmed - mogwai play on the 3rd september and it's still free!!!

-iain

further to the "spanish festivals in the autumn" guesswork below - the latest rumour on the spanish music forum scene is that mogwai may be playing at festival rock de alaquàs near valencia on either 2nd or 3rd september, alongside super furry animals. this is, however, no more than speculation - the festival website still has details on the 2004 event, for starters.

sounds like an interesting event - organised by the city council, and the tickets have always been free (with priority for the locals). thanks, david.

stuart will be dj-ing at a live8/g8 tie-in event on july 3rd in edinburgh - culled from the scotsman:

top scottish bands and djs are to take part in a fundraising concert to raise cash for world poverty ahead of the g8 summit.

edinburgh club cabaret voltaire is to host the fundraiser, called 'make poverty history', the day after more than 200,000 people are set to protest in the capital. bands idlewild, teenage fanclub and mogwai are to feature in the event, as well as djs from edinburgh clubs snatch and modern lovers, which will take place after a stop the war coalition march in the city centre. there will also be a live set from el presidente and an auction of music memorabilia to help generate funds for action aid.

thanks, steve and craig.

sonorama 14/06/05

hot on the heels of the istanbul festival cancellation, mogwai are headlining the second night of the sonorama festival in aranda de duero, spain, on august 20. tickets 20 euros per day, other acts include ocean colour scene(!).

the "spanish festivals in the autumn" mentioned by stuart in yesterday's pitchfork story may well be the 'wintercase' shows, visiting madrid, barcelona, bilbao and valencia in november. thanks, javi.

update 16/6 - "we’re definitely not playing the wintercase festival". thanks, barry.

istanbul cancelled, spanish shows in the autumn 13/06/05

after the glasgow and st. petersburg cancellations last week comes the sad news that martin is still not well enough to play the scheduled 'rockistanbul' show on 20th june. get well soon, martin!

culled from pitchfork:

mogwai recording new album

caroline bermudez reports:
in between shattering eardrums with notoriously loud live sets where their feet never seem to move away from their big muff pedals, scottish cresecendo-rockers mogwai are recording a new album at their newly purchased studio in glasgow, the castle of doom. (yes, really.) tentatively titled 'mr. beast', the album is slated for a release in early 2006. tony doogan, who produced the mountain goats' tallahassee, a handful of hefner records, and a number of belle & sebastian songs (among them "legal man" and "your cover's blown" off the booksep) is sharing co-production duties on mr. beast with mogwai.

e-mailing pitchfork, guitarist/vocalist stuart braithwaite reports that recording is one-third complete, and that the band aims to finish by the start of august. song titles include "friend of the night" and "robocop vs. the orange walk". when asked how the new album will differ from their last one, happy songs for happy people, braithwaite wrote, "don't know yet, it will probably do for flangers what interpol did for suits." the flanger, for those of you not in the know, is an effects pedal. like we told you, the mogwai boys do love their gear.

as for touring, the band recently cancelled shows in st. petersburg and glasgow due to drummer martin bulloch's tendonitis, but will hit the road once he heals. braithwaite said, "arm permitting, we are playing istanbul next monday [the rockistanbul festival on june 20, whose line-up also contains kraftwerk, the kills, garbage, and megadeth]. we also have a few spanish festivals lined up for the autumn [and] we'll also be playing the abc (new venue in glasgow) at some point, rescheduled from last week." if you do happen to catch them in turkey or spain, definitely bring ear plugs; as this reporter learned back in 2001 at the sxsw matador label showcase, your ears will ring for a day and a half if you don't.

into the woods 12/06/05

more news as and when we get it. hope that no one has had a wasted journey!

7/6/05 : news from the band that due to injury, they cannot play in glasgow or st petersburg as scheduled.

st. petersburg 05/06/05

rockfeedback 23/05/05

further to our news report below - rockfeedback tv debuts on mtv2 on 4th and 5th june. filmed at the two uk atp festivals this year, mogwai are to appear at some point.

a documentary-themed affair, the two, on-location debuting episodes are intimately shot, behind-the-scenes viewing-treats, perhaps boasting instances that viewers are seldom provided – namely, artists not being asked vacuous questions, or imposed in an unnatural studio environment. in 'rockfeedback tv' reside artists in their natural habitat – on the tourbus, in the dressing-room, onstage. wherever the real work is done.

filmed at the prestigious 'all tomorrow’s parties' festivals, the featured acts of 'rockfeedback tv' that kick off our voyeuristic journey constitute a myriad of varied and crucial talent – from sonic youth (pictured), through to love with arthur lee, via mogwai, the shins, the fiery furnaces, stephen malkmus and dizzee rascal.

other artists / names set to feature in this statement-of-intent entrance – legendary engineer steve albini, todd, dead meadow, erase errata, mclusky, bobby conn, cass mccombs, the boredoms, turbonegro, lightning bolt, cex and mission of burma.

that this is essential viewing isn’t to be contested. you tell us another music-show funded on a budget of peanuts that tells it like it is and isn’t scared to do so. (sorry for the self-righteousness – but television’s been waiting for this). please tune in. support future / culture / the genius of today and tomorrow. before the chance slips away.

more shows are scheduled for the rest of the year. keep posted. a brand-new website has been launched to coincide with the sporadically-screened series: rockfeedback.tv

details on the show content are scarce at present, so we're unsure whether footage of mogwai's set (including two unreleased new tracks, lest we forget) will feature.

thanks, steve.

update 24/5 - these shows were screened at the gallo atp festival a few weeks ago, and the footage was filmed at the 'directors cut' atp festivals in 2004, so no new songs. can anyone confirm? thanks, mark.

-rob

never ending story 23/05/05

readers with long memories may remember that members of mogwai contributed to the debut album by neverendingwhitelights some time back. the album finally has a release schedule - late summer, canada only. more info as we get it.

thanks, steve.

bad behaviour 13/05/05

mogwai and in particular the opening section of 'hunted by a freak', have been used once again by programme makers in a trailer for one of their upcoming shows. the show in question is 'bad behaviour' and it follows desperate families with out-of-control children who seek out a child behaviour expert in the hope he can help where all others have failed. nice sense of humour from the makers in the choice of song!

live in june, and other news 04/05/05

mogwai are to headline the opening night of new glasgow venue 'abc' on wednesday 8th june. tickets are £14, available from the mogwai online shop. a further date takes place at kadetsky korpus in st petersburg, russia on 11th june.

we are very pleased to announce that our only uk show this year (forgotten anything? - rob) will be on wednesday june the 8th on the opening night of the new glasgow venue the abc in sauchiehall street. as the name suggests, the venue is in the building which previously occupied the abc cinema. having seen the venue we are immensely excited about being the first band to play in it. supports will be announced shortly. tickets are £14 + booking fee, on sale now from our online shop and very soon from normal ticket outlets.

in addition, it appears that good progress has been made on recording for mogwai's fifth album. sessions are taking place at the band's new 'castle of doom' studio (are they making this stuff up?!) with tony doogan at the helm. an early 2006 release is mooted, under the title 'mr beast', and possible track titles include 'the monster mash'. can't wait for the merch.

some rock action bits - the part chimp album 'i am come' is out on 4th july, preceded by the 'war machine' single on 20th june. errors are in session on radio one's rob da bank show on thursday 26th may. the kling klang album is called 'esthetik of destruction'. no release date set as yet.

atp tv 04/05/05

from nme.com:

all tomorrow’s parties is set to make its tv debut.

the alternative, camber sands-based, festival will feature in the opening shows of new mtv2 series ‘rockfeedback tv’. last year’s event which featured the likes of dizzee rascal, mogwai and sonic youth, was filmed for the show and will make up the first two edition which will be shown on the channel on june 4 and 5.

the new series, which was premiered with a screening at this year’s atp, aims to showcase the best in “new, lo-fi and alt” music with live footage and documentary-style features. the show will be presented by toby l, creator of cult website rockfeedback.com, which was once described by alan mcgee as "the purest youth of the 00s". six episodes in total are expected to be screened by mtv2 throughout the year.

-rob

looking back? 02/05/05

the people behind the atp festival are putting together a series of shows in london under the banner 'don't look back', wherein classic albums are revisited in their entirety. sophia will perform the full 'the infinite circle' album on october 5 at the barbican in london, on a double bill with dirty three who will perform their 'ocean songs' album. mudhoney are also to play 'superfuzz bigmuff' at koko in camden on september 16th.

from playlouder.com:

many more acts are to be announced as playing their classics, with rumours and what we've snuffled up calling around this morning suggesting that public enemy might even hop over to do 'nation of millions', and mogwai do 'young team'. corrrr.

thanks, jean-paul.

-rob

rrrated 28/04/05

stuart picks the tracks for this week's 'underrated/overrated' feature in nme:

underrated:
sunno))) - hell-o)))-ween (from 'white 2', 2004)
they're making some of the most amazing music around today. it's really slow, drumless metal - like listening to a slayer album on a record player with its batteries running down. they dress up like druids as well. i saw them play at autechre's atp and it below my mind. this song is exactly the same length as it takes me to drive to asda from my house, so it's perfect for that journey.

overrated:
scissor sisters - comfortably numb (from 'scissor sisters', 2004)
i'm not precious about pink floyd, but this is just rubbish. the first time i saw them was on graham norton's show and i thought it was a sketch. they're just the same as elton john and all that horrible 70s music that i thought modern music was here to replace. i think by being camp the scissor sisters have managed to get people who really should know better to not admit that they're shit.

-rob

festive fifty 24/04/05

apparently mogwai are the only band ever to place three tracks that exceed nine minutes in length in john peel's annual 'festive fifty' round-up. this places them at number 26 in the 'most successful festive fifty bands or artists', according to "the festive fifty" by mark whitby, recently published by nevin publishing. the book also contains a complete history of the festive fifty (with commentary on each year and entries of particular interest), a complete alphabetical list of every band to appear (with details of personnel who took part), the top fifty bands to appear in the festive fifty (with biography)...you get the idea.

experimental dental school 19/04/05

some news on forthcoming rock action action (if you haven't picked up the errors single, you really need to, y'know):

the debut 7" from errors has now sold out from the online shop and also from our distributor. the band are about to start mixing the follow up ep with mogwai's john cummings. we've added some new errors shirts to the online shop as well.

you can hear the session they recorded at bbc scotland for vic galloway's air program by clicking here: air website. the recently recorded session from maida vale for radio one's rob da bank is pencilled in for broadcast in may so keep an eye out.

also you can pick up one of errors early tracks 'best nose in paris' on the fine compilation put out by the lovely people at nice n' sleazys in glasgow. entitled "nice'n'sleazy presents 'this is what it is' the record features contributions from parkattack, uncle john and whitelock, the magnificents, muliplies and lucky luke...it's available from sleazys and monorail. if you're from far afield you may have to hassle people to get it...for more info about the glasgow institution that is nice n sleazy's visit http://www.nicensleazy.com.

it's been a long time coming, but we've finally got the masters for the sophomore part chimp album. it's called 'i am come' and it's amazing...there's a single coming as well...'war machine' which will be backed with exclusive previously unreleased material from sessions in bavaria. true.

more malc 11/04/05

more news on malcolm middleton's forthcoming album:

barry burns played keyboards on 6 or 7 songs, adding his usual magic touch. stuart braithwaite played guitar on 2 songs, "bear with me" and "a moaning shite". the latter will only be available on the japanese version of the cd, but features one hell of a guitar solo by stuart. a version with an alternative solo will be available later on as a free download on malcolm's new website, www.malcolmmiddleton.co.uk.

"loneliness shines" + "no modest bear" are released on 7" on 23rd may. barry played a "roland paraphonic keyboard" on "loneliness shines". the album "into the woods" is released on 13th june.

the edge 08/04/05

as we reported a few weeks back, stuart and barry have contributed to malcolm middleton's forthcoming album. details are still sketchy, but the album is titled 'into the woods', and will be preceeded by a 7" single, 'loneliness shines', both released by chemikal underground. apparently stuart and barry have contributed 'a fair bit' to the record, and stuart plays on the 7" b-side 'moaning shite'.
