the government commissions versions of 'superheroes of bmx' and 'like herod' were used in episode 18 of the current season of 'csi'. this continues the franchise's use of mogwai with 'tracy' used previously in the spin-off 'csi:miami'. apparently both were used when evidence was being analysed in the lab.
this has aired in the us and should appear in the uk later in the year when the series catches up with america. 'csi' airs in the uk at 9.00pm tuesdays on five.
thanks, michael and 'grissom'.

about sums it up
|
04/03/05
|
brightlight has always made a point of highlighting why mogwai's fans love the band so much, and this extract from jason rogers' review of 'government commissions' is a good example. the full review can be read on the government commssions page, or on the music@murmurs.com forum.
if i had to name a particular moment from the past decade when i came the closest to musical transcendence, one of the first to come to mind would be the night of june 19, 2001, when i stood in the crowd at variety playhouse in atlanta and watched mogwai play "new paths to helicon pt i". stuart braithwaite and company barely seemed to move at all on the stage as the instrumental began with the windy whisper of keyboards joined by a subtly ominous bass line and suppressed cymbal percussion. the deceptively simple instrumental took several minutes to build up momentum and those of us in the audience could feel the change in the air, almost like the tingle at the back of one’s neck when one watches the pressure needle in a boiler room slowly inch past the red marks. finally, the sonic wave crest of guitar distortion struck and, as the stage lights brightened accordingly, loudness washed over us with an oceanic intensity that was somehow both fierce and serene.

cat no here
|
27/02/05
|
mogwai debuted two new tracks during yesterday's appearance at the atp festival. other highlights of the hour-long mid-afternoon show included 'r u still in 2 it?' with aidan moffat on vocals. setlist etc here: gig260205.php.
from memory:
'glower of a cat' - maybe 3 or 4 mins long. fast, loud and riff-heavy throughout. all guitars, no keyboards. everyone stops at the same time. can't think of anything mogwai have released that it sounds like.
'we're no here' - longer, slower building track. heavy section in the middle, but even this seemed much slower-paced. some fantastic interlocking guitar lines running through it.
if anyone has anything to add to these descriptions, or disagrees hugely, get in touch. i am, as many of you have worked out already, no musician.
if you recorded the show, please get in touch.

arthur baker was interviewed by eye.net recently, and suggested that he is getting closer to completing the long-awaiting collaborations album. for the benefit of newer readers - arthur baker collaborated with numerous musicians on this project, commencing in 1999. mogwai were enlisted as backing band on a rendition of an ancient jewish hymn. a different version of this, recorded with steve albini, was released as mogwai's 'my father my king' single in 2001.

phew! there's a lot of stuff here. excerpts from an interview with barry on polish radio 3:
the next mogwai album will be produced by tony doogan. it probably won't be released this year. several songs are ready, three of them very loud. none of the tracks completed to date have vocals, and there may well be no vocals on the album.
mogwai may be playing some festivals over the summer, but no tour is planned.
stuart and barry have contributed to malcolm middleton's recently-completed second album. barry has been working on a remix for engineers. the collaboration with kronos quartet is still on the cards.

rock action update
|
21/12/04
|
culled from the e-mail newsletter sent out yesterday, some forthcoming rock action highlights:
errors - expect a super limited single early 2005 with ep early spring and an album to drop sometime in early summer. mogwai's john cummings will be working alongside the band on the record so you can expect it to be loud. hopefully they should be in for a bbc session with vic galloway in scotland early in march as well.
part chimp - the sessions for the new record were completed late summer in cava with john cummings and now we have final mixes delivered and artwork is on its way. hurrah! hopefully should be ready to go by the end of the month...we've yet to confirm a release date but are hoping for it to be in the shops sometime in march.
kling klang - they're currently hibernating at the moment. however, to our great happiness, ali passed on the master
cd for the kling klang album at a recent moniack show...and it sounds amazing! all being well it should be out in the first half of '05.
james orr complex - i will be playing several shows with alasdair roberts at the end of january in spain. i will confirm dates/venues next week but i can say that madrid, bilbao and san sebastian are among the stop-off points.

earlier this year, mogwai remixed long-view's 'in a dream'. the remix was released on cd single and 7". it will reappear (24th january) on 'subversions', a limited-edition release collecting remixes of various tracks from long-view's 'mercury' album. other remixers featured include elbow, andy votel, jack knife lee, and noted u2 tribute act ulrich schnauss. there seems to be some confusion at present whether 'subversions' will be released on lp or cd. more info: hmv.co.uk | uk-flava.com
we reported some weeks ago that mogwai had also remixed 'compliments', from bloc party's forthcoming debut album 'silent alarm'. v2records.co.jp reports that a mogwai remix of a different track, 'plans', will feature as an exclusive japan-only bonus track on the album, alongside remixes from four tet and m83. more news as we get it.

barry's trousers
|
01/11/04
|
stuart has been amongst the many people sharing their memories of john peel this week, in scotland on sunday.
throughout his career, peel was more interested in having a curry with the rezillos at kushi's in
edinburgh's broughton street, or popping into stuart braithwaite's mum's house in lanarkshire when filming
a tv series in the neighbourhood, to see if mogwai's frontman fancied coming out for a pint.
interestingly braithwaite considers his nineties crop to be the definitive peel generation, although his
leftfield predecessors from the seventies and eighties would all claim him as their own. his current
favourite memory dates from one of peel's stints presenting bbc television's coverage of the glastonbury festival.
"rem were playing, and they were desperate to speak with michael stipe, but he said he would only do it if
john peel conducted the interview. john politely turned him down, explaining that i was already booked to come on for that slot. maybe he thought he owed us one from the previous year. his trousers had burst, and barry [burns, mogwai's man of many instruments] had to lend him a pair of his."
perhaps that is how the most influential dj of the past 50 years would like to be remembered: a man of many splendid and diverse records, but not enough trousers.
thanks, steve.

eska
|
26/10/04
|
stuart drummed for eska during mogwai's formative period, but until today we'd been unsure of his exact contribution to their recordings. thanks to martin donnelly for setting the record straight:
i can clarify a couple of things for you. the drummer on (eska's) "trucking and paving" and the split with the poison sisters is way too bad to be martin bulloch - i'm the guilty party.
stuart took over from me at the eska kit between the recording of these singles and their release. he used to annoy colin at gigs by standing up behind his drums and using sticks as devil horns behind his back.
see the collaborations discography for more details.

|
lifted from poptones.co.uk, an excerpt from an interview with todd eckert, producer of the forthcoming joy division movie:
q: how are you going to be approaching the soundtracks to the joy division movie?
a: there are likely going to be three soundtracks to the movie; the first will consist of original joy division music, the second will consist of incidental music for the film, hopefully from the members of new order, though they may not be recording as new order per se. and the third soundtrack will be a little bit different - we have asked people who we know and like to do a cover of a joy division song. so far, mogwai and black rebel motorcycle club have expressed some interest to this, along with a few others. but to maintain the intensity and anxiety of each joy division track we are giving the bands only a couple days to record their cover - we will arrange the studio time at comparatively inconvient times - like, if they have a day off in-between a tour - to provide an atmosphere of intensity.

c'mon you reds
|
11/10/04
|
from the guardian last friday (8th october):
other welsh people are more aggressively anti-english. when, for instance, england played croatia in the european championships earlier this year, multi-instrumentalist barry burns, on tour in zagreb with his band mogwai, told the croatian media: "i'd love croatia to beat england. please destroy the bastards." burns could not be contacted to express his hopes this time, but they may well have been unprintable.
for the uninitiated, the story concerns a new european union map of europe which somehow manages to omit wales completely. the guardian published a correction notice last saturday.

new kids on the bloc
|
10/10/04
|
stuart has confirmed, via the mogwai.co.uk q&a, that mogwai have been asked to remix 'compliments', a track from bloc party's forthcoming debut album.
in a recent interview for polish radio, bloc party bassist gordon moakes said:
we want to occupy a space in music a bit like mogwai do - they are well respected and able to make exactly the music they want to on their own terms. they have carved a niche for themselves that everybody understands and they inspire great devotion and nobody is waiting for them to fall flat on their faces. it's
the ideal for a band.
i only met stuart briefly a few years ago as a fan, when they played a live peel session that i attended. i doubt he'd remember me. i absolutely adore that band. we've just approached them for a remix which we're hoping will come up trumps. i'd love to hang out with the guy. he's been very inspiring to me personally.
thanks, bartek.

more jetset nonsense
|
06/10/04

seems mogwai's pre-matador us label, jetset records (i won't dignify them by linking to their website) have been up to their usual tricks. confirmation welcome, but apparently they've pressed up a two-track cd [twa05.1pro] containing the 'ten rapid' versions of 'summer' and 'helicon 1', to promote their reissue of that album. why?
thanks to nat for the scan above.

mogwai - hunted by a freak
mogwai - hunted by a freak (boom bip remix)
mogwai - stanley kubrick (video)
thanks to steve. it's worth noting that 'hunted by a freak (boom bip remix)' is previously unreleased and was apparently scheduled for a 'hunted by a freak' remixes ep - presumably this release has been shelved?

some more of our trademark steve pearson-assisted wild speculation for ya:
barry mentions on mogwai.co.uk that john's been working on a syd barrett remix. syd barrett's records are released by harvest records. boom bip's website mentions that he has been working on a harvest records remix project "including other artists sonic youth, jim o' rourke, sigur ros and more". mogwai have previous remixing connections with boom bip.
confirmation welcome. more news as we get it.
update 22/9 - from mogwai.co.uk:
we're remixing a syd barrett tune because we were asked to by harvest.
update 26/9 - syd barrett tune in question is 'baby lemonade'
