encore:
my father my king
thanks to steve pearson, al and mark palmer.
the show was billed as 'guitar-only' due to venue constraints, but most of the
usual equipment was used during the show.
support from the mighty flashlight, with stuart on guitar.
from steve pearson:
mogwai walked off the stage at southpaw, brooklyn about 30mins
ago, having flapped the trousers and skirts of everyone present. a
blistering gig - very loud and sweaty. there was some keyboard,
although no sampler (held up at customs or something), and plenty of
earth-thumping guitars. nice, small venue that stuart compared to a
school hall (due to no-smoking regulations), although john the
guitarist lit up a ciggie at the end.
too tired and deaf to type much, but the encore was the 25min noise
fest of 'my father my king'. stuart managed to break 4 strings, but
played on like a true trooper, and the last 5 minutes had him and
john bringing the tempo down until stuart was just tapping the back
of his guitar, while john provided swishy feedback noises. one of the
best mogwai endings i've seen.
fairly good crowd, as well - little talking. and i won't mention
stuart's sars jokes.
i was a bit late in (having to queue for an hour - grrrr), but support was advertised as 'mighty flashlight' - it was definitely him, aka mike fellows (ex rites of spring).
it was mike on guitar, and stuart braithwaite joined him on guitar for at least the
four songs i saw, possibly all his set.
from al:
the show was excellent, very loud though the sound was muddy so sometimes the loud parts of, for example 'ex-cowboy', were just noise and you couldn't hear the guitars and progression of the song.
the four new songs sounded just great amongst all the old ones, 'skeletons..' is easily one of their best songs and 'ratts..' was the loudest point of the show.
stuart also played with mighty flashlight. he played a heavily reverbed rendition of the first half of the american national anthem before noodling until the singer fixed his guitar (nobody really noticed this as it was incredibly soft and people were talking)
also at the end of 'my father my king', stuart was playing some song with his tattered guitar...it was a definite chord progression so you should ask if anyone recognized it
