from philip jamieson jr:
easily the best of the 5 times that i’ve seen mogwai dating all the way back to 2001. incredible setlist, and surprising energy from the band. helicon 1 was obviously a great highlight (as it always is), glasgow mega-snake tore the room to shreds, and the noise climax at the end of we’re no here contained all of the un-settling, majestic terror that mogwai are capable of giving. you don’t know jesus was played somewhat faster than in the past, as was helicon 2. both sounded tremendous. stuarts pedal work on i know you are… was especially wonderful, as their soundman added a great r-l panning effect on the main speakers to space it out and add ambience. very professional performance in terms of lighting (better than ever), setlist and overall delivery, balanced out nicely with a lighthearted on-stage atmosphere, some rarer song selections such as tracy and stanley kubrick, and a good amtosphere inside the avalon with the crowd. i was especially impressed with the sound mix this evening. excellent balance on all instruments, while still maintaining a forceful, agressive punch. only the closing noise segment bordered on being un-bearably loud. concerts like this make me want to put down the guitar and give up. mogwai really did it right tonight, and i’m prouder than ever to consider myself a fan of this band. great job fellas.
