review, from melody maker |
i'm somewhat ashamed to see a large group of drunken kappa lager lads making their way to the
front of the crowd for mogwai's set. but when i see them waving their arms and closing their
eyes at every chord change in 'summer', it suddenly makes perfect, obvious sense. mogwai are the
oasis of the noise underground, the unarguable common ground: there's no need to convince people
of the sheer, bloody melodic gorgeousness.
they don't come much smaller than pocket glaswegians mogwai. in their case, small does not
equate with beautiful. mogwai are a fearsome post-rock monster; a sibilant symphony of purring,
whirring guitars and extra-terrestrial screeches of white noise. they slump about the stage
approaching steely silence before suddenly lurching into directionless feedback fury and cymbal
slashes. all of this riveting stuff and they manage to make a guitar sound like metal mickey's
voice. boogie boogie indeed.
