'hunted', i know you are', 'you don't know jesus', 'jim morrison' and 'batcat' were tv-broadcast at around 2am on 13th july 2009 as part of bbc 3's 'red button' coverage of the festival.
a tip top performance from mogwai tonight, not as monolitically loud as usual but still a blistering "best of" set. in particular "you dont know jesus" sounded frankly huge, and "batcat" was brutal as ever and a perfect end to the weekend. stuart for some reason constantly kept telling the crowd "thanks for coming" but the band seemed in good spirits all round. all in all a good gig! 8/10
mogwai headlined the king tut's wah wah tent at t in the park tonight (july 12), with a loud, if sparsely-attended set.
the scottish post-rock band played a selection of tracks that spanned the length of their career, culminating in a viciously heavy rendition of 'batcat' from their last album 'the hawk is howling'.
'i'm jim morrison, i'm dead' went down particularly well with fans, with graceful piano lines from multi-instrumentalist barry burns blending into the barrage of noise provided by guitarists john cummings and stuart braithwaite.
the glasgow band weren't very chatty, except for braithwaite thanking the crowd profusely between each song.
the king tut's wah wah tent was less than half-full for the duration of the set, but the noise made by those present was such that it wasn't noticeable.
despite the band remaining almost motionless throughout, the likes of 'hunted by a freak' and 'i know you are but what am i?' were played at full intensity.
embarrassingly, the mighty mogwai come out to what can barely be described as a crowd. it’s a sad day for t in the park when daniel merriweather and some pop band who showed up two weeks ago can attract ten times the audience of one of the most innovative bands scotland has ever spawned.
unperturbed, the quintet put the expensive pa to the test with post-rock gem ‘glasgow mega-snake’. never a band to pander to trends, expectations or traditions, mogwai test the patience of some fans with a slow, complex instrumental offerings when chants of ‘blur are shite’ ruin the subtlety of the performance’s quieter moments.
thankfully the crowd doubles to a handful of folk by the time the majestic ‘i’m jim morrison, i’m dead’ piano loop can be heard. stunning.
