from scott deplonty:
the variety playhouse is a theater in the little five points district of atlanta. although there is a standing area, seating, and a balcony, all tickets are general admission.
this was the last show with part chimp, whom stuart called "tremendous." unfortunately, i had not heard their music before, and i can best describe them as something like melvins meets sonic youth with mark arm or j.mascis singing. at times. they had a really great, low-end, sludge sound.
this was my first mogwai show, and they were fantastic. in fact, it was perhaps one of the best shows that i've seen. they had an incredibly clear sound, so that a sudden shift in dynamics wasn't painful, although extremely loud. they were easily able to hold the attention of the entire audience and, even during the very quiet passages, no one spoke. stuart broke guitar strings twice, once during '2 rights' (i think) and once during 'mogwai fear satan'. finally, the drummer for part chimp gave martin a hand in the encore during 'mogwai fear satan'.
my only regret is that they didn't play 'like herod'. that was the first song that i heard by mogwai, and it made me think "my god, i must own this album right now." nonetheless, they put on a really good show, and i'm looking forward to the next time they come around.
