review/comment from phil maves |
mogwai played a secret show last night at a small pub called bj's in the
town of fredonia in new york state. fredonia is a university town about
45 minutes away from buffalo. bj's isn't too far away from dave
fridmann's tarboxroad studio, and polaroids of the band drinking at
bj's can be seen on the inner sleeve of 'come on die young'. fridmann was
on hand as sound engineer.
i found out about the show from my girlfriend, who is attending school
in town. she and a friend spoke to the band saturday night (I think) and
they said they'd be back tuesday to play. the show was free, and very
laid back. the band used a minimal set-up (no extra percussion for
stuart, no rhodes piano for barry). just guitars, bass & drum kit. they
played for approx. 1 hour.
stuart introduced the band jokingly, saying something to the effect of:
"we're mogwai, from glasgow, scotland, and we recommend the wings"
(chicken wings are hugely popular in this part of ny state). he also
thanked everyone for coming out in shit weather to see them, and thanked
the staff of bj's for putting up with them "acting like fannies."
no one i was with took pictures, but pub employees did. this was a much
less intense (but still excellent & loud) show, in comparison to their
rochester, ny gig in december 1998 at the bug jar. i spoke briefly to
dave fridmann, who gave me some info about the flaming lips. if anyone's
interested, they're heading back into the studio in march and their
proposed christmas lp is still on for a late 2001 release, if all goes
well.
